  • 35 years into the Squamish Estuary Management Plan and I learn in the Council meeting on Fortis BC pipeline drill test development permit that the District of Squamish has the development permit area extending into the Squamish Estuary Management Plan Area … this means that Fortis BC has only to meet the guidelines of the development permit(not the objectives) and can then proceed to drill

  •  a vote for Council to defer their decision on support for the development permit passed and a couple of weeks will be all that is available for Council to gather info on this project
  •  to see info on the 7th Ave Transportation Corridor in the OCP to service one business, the Squamish Terminals, use this link:http://1drv.ms/14upOeF

SEMP and Stopping Fortis BC

Hello

Best not to allow the Fortis BC Project.
In the event that DOS Council wisely refuses the Fortis BC Project…
and the BC Government over rules …
The Squamish Estuary Management Plan has it’s own criteria for
habitat loss in the form of compensation
for example:  the transportation corridor
is to be offset by the digging of a swan slough to the west of the present swan slough
as the present swan slough would be filled in
for the road and double track from what is no longer just an Industrial Park,
to one business, the Squamish Terminal
The Squamish Terminal, owned by www.griegstar.com, Star Shipping of Norway
polluting our wild salmon estuary.
Grieg also owns www.grieg.no  Grieg Seafood, farmed salmon polluting wild salmon migratory routes.
Therefore:
There must be Compensation for the industrial activity of not only the intrusion of a helicopter pad
for the purpose of drilling test holes for the Fortis BC Pipeline
there must be compensation for the risk of a pipeline accident which would endanger the entire estuary including the areas protected from Industrial intrusion in the SEMP (Squamish Estuary Management Plan)
Looking on the squamish.ca website
searching
Estuary
then the section for 1999 Squamish Estuary Management Plan
Perhaps a suitable compensation in my opinion would be the removal of the
transportation corridor from the OCP which is the 7th Ave Connector
and the flood-gating of the present spur line to the terminals
and more
Certainly there will be a loss of food as well as habitat and this needs to be addressed
as compensation for the wildlife immediately affected
Restoring flora and fauna does not immediately become food and habitat
nor does it restore the synchronicity of the estuary
In the event of an accident to the gas pipeline
there must be extensive and aggressive containment and restoration
that must be agreed upon by the community
The danger and noise of the compressor station is also part of the Fortis BC project
It would be possible for Squamish Council to rezone the lots which are undeveloped
so they better suit the present uses of the Industrial/Business Park
Perhaps Commercial Zoning?
Fortis BC is certainly welcome to plan to put their pipeline elsewhere
outside the District of Squamish
The fact is the Provincial Government can overrule the District of Squamish Council.
In this event the SEMP compensation and protection mechanisms must also be implemented
including extensive and long term community involvement.
This fact, that the BC Government can overrulle the DOS Council,
should not be taken into account when the DOS Council decides whether or not to
oppose the Fortis BC permits.
The District of Squamish Council must respond to the community from which it was
elected.
Again, extensive and long term community involvement is necessary as this is not just about THREE
30 X 30 metre helicopter pads for boring TEST holes.
This is about the pipeline which will affect the entire estuary if there is an accident.
The Squamish Estuary Management Plan was achieved after decades of intense community
involvement.
The millions of dollars in relocation costs by West Barr attest to the validity of the SEMP and
how the compensation was achieved by West Barr leasing an area on the east shore of Howe Sound five times the size of the log sort in the Central Squamish Estuary
This relocation process has taken 15 years, and is to be followed by the logging operators
in the SODC area also moving to their leases on the east shore of Howe Sound.
Industry has been allowed in the Squamish Estuary in the SEMP
A review process is part of the SEMP
THIS industrial proposal by Fortis BC must also adhere to the
compensation rules of the SEMP.
Thank you for your interest.
Sincerely
Deb McBride

WHAT’S MY NUMBER

YEAH…  BACK ON THE INTERNET TODAY!

313 Voters gave me their trust election.

When I spoke in opposition to Squamish council I knew 313 voters were with me, and so did Council.

We need a Official Community Plan that solves problems not one that creates them.

Those who vote for me, trust me, Debra McBride,

to represent their vote to Squamish Council.

NO TO WLNG Must be the biggest issue because not all candidates know their position on it.

In the 10 municipal elections I have entered it is the only issue to have a protest march to protect the estuary and Howe Sound from WLNG, Fortis BC pipeline from the compressor station through the estuary to tankers for export.

What is fracked at one end and spilling at the other has no place on the planet.

Long time issues for me each election and in the forefront in 2014 are:

  • The estuary is also being threatened by the 7th Ave. Connector and the concept of using it as a dike.
  • No road and double-track through the estuary should go to one business, the Squamish Terminal.
  • No estuary is a parking lot for boats and I oppose the Squamish Oceanfront Development marina.

Good evening, I am Debra McBride I am # 10 on the Ballot.

For over 30 years I have tried to oppose Squamish Councils.

The only time voters can effectively oppose is at the election polls.

If you elect me to Squamish Council I will know when to say “NO” for you.

Know that I have opposed the high-density housing sites including Kingswood and the old mill site, in this flood plain, our estuary.

A traffic disaster greets folks who come to Squamish to have fun.

Imperative is a commuter bus from Whistler to Vancouver for out-of-town workers and visitors.

Locally, rider numbers justify full schedules daily on buses and handi darts.

There’s NO justification for Woodfibre LNG

or the Fortis BC pipeline

from the noisy compressor,

through our estuary

or for the tankers to export the fracked.

No co-operation. No compromise.

So Right! Eco-Tourism success in Squamish gives us a healthy environment and jobs. As an event promoting volunteer it became obvious to me that Squamish is the fun capital! We’ve got whales!

Our estuary without federally funded dredging and with help from local groups is being restored.

I say NO to WLNG, Fortis BC and tankers.

Our challenge: to make eco-tourism viable year-round.

Squamish eco-tourism based on free environmental assets requires a broad range of jobs, transportation and accommodation solutions, added daycare and a well-funded emergency network.

For the thousands of visitors we need:

  • Year round campgrounds that allow for trailers and long term stays. Present campground zonings must remain and more need to be added to protect our pristine waterways in our easily accessible forests.   A tree-protection bylaw is a necessity.   Mature trees are beautiful life-giving jewels.
  • Transportation solutions must include more passenger train options, a commuter bus and full schedules daily for local buses and the handi-dart.
  • Drop-in daycares would allow parents to play too.
  • Our ever-present emergency crews need more funding and quicker access to medi-vac helicopters.

Summer events with amazing world-class competitions and music drew thousands of folks who would be quite happy to have fun in Squamish year-round. Our challenge is to make eco-tourism viable year round.

Few know who brought me back to the Council Chambers podium after deciding that the elected council should deal with voters complaints.

Kelsey, the Shaw Cable TV camerman, editor and know it all behind the scenes of

all council meetings.

Hearing my discontent with council, Kelsey told me a story. One person spoke up, influenced one council member and made a difference.

Almost election time anyway so enough with the time out, back to politics.

The Equestrian Community was at the finishing line of a two-year project for approval from council to build new barns. It was an opportunity to make a little speech in support and I ended when all laughed at my saying “ they really do need a new barn”. One person consulted with me as to the wisdom of speaking up, and did great!   Council even passed 3rd Reading after the Public Hearing! Full circle! Thanks to Kelsey!

The Official Community Plan was initiated in the early 1980’s after a community survey, which established a greenway along the Mamquam Blind Channel! I began telling everybody at the meetings that we needed to protect the Squamish Estuary. Another story comes from this time of the request to relocate the log sort in the central estuary because the owner did not want to harm the estuary. This week, in 2014, this is being accomplished! I was a part of it by sheer persistence and insistence that space be made available for the move. It didn’t matter that the Public Involvement Work Group to the Squamish Estuary Management Plan had been dissolved in 1982/3 or that it was 1999. The new site is owned by Squamish First Nations, so the future there will be interesting, considering the forest management now taken on by Squamish First Nations.

Squamish, is a town of old timers and new comers. What guides Council to zone the Mamquam Blind Channel for tall buildings and industry?   Luckily, the economy and lack of federal dredging funds has given new eco-tourism businesses and the estuary a chance to show how extraordinary and valuable is Squamish Estuary BC.

Giants of the bird and whale varieties have become common as pollution is diluted and buried by Mother Nature. Migrating birds have tried to resume their territorial stances. Squamish Council has other plans, especially for one of the last SEMP Planning Areas, the Upper Mamquam Blind Channel.

The Public Hearing process on Kingswood and the conditions to 3rd Reading are passing quickly.   What a horror for the birds and the people living in little houses there and those who will be having traffic accidents as they enter or try to exit Squamish, BC. And just when the highway was not so often called Killer.

Now! In comes the long awaited and much dreaded tanker, LNG, pipeline Fortis BC plan. Need some tree huggers on Council to say NO to WLNG, the Tankers and FORTIS BC!

One would be me, Deb McBride, with decades of experience opposing government plans for destruction.

VOTE TO ELECT DEB FOR SQUAMISH COUNCILLOR

DEBRA MCBRIDE

No Woodfibre LNG protesters group photo Squamish City Hall 2014-07-15 19.54.42-1 web (1)

I have been defending the estuary for more than 30 years and now in my 9th election.  I opposed the Industrial zoning for what was a forest in the early ’80’s and is now an industrial site for a monster compressor on 12 acres soon to be owned by Fortis BC to put a pipeline through the Squamish Estuary after first clearing three:  30 X 30 metre areas which will be both disruptive and eliminate food and shelter supplies for the wild in the Squamish Estuary Wildlife Management Area.  I am a founding member/director of the original Squamish Estuary Conservation Society in the 1980’s and have battled on the Squamish Estuary Management Public Involvement Work Group for decades after it was eliminated by government.  Present Council has ignored the Squamish Estuary Management Plan process of having a separate review of environmental impact by projects on and bordering the Squamish Estuary such as Fortis BC holes/clearings and KINGSWOOD.  KINGSWOOD borders the last of 2 Planning Assessment Areas in the Squamish Estuary Management Plan.  Other societies on which I was a founding member and or director in the 19i80’s are doing great:  Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Sea to Sky Community Services Society, Howe Sound Women’s Centre. Mountain FM benefited when I volunteered to take minutes of Council meetings for Mountain Monitor, the weekly interview with the Mayor, also the Brackendale Art Gallery from my PR work, cooking and cleaning, the Newport Gallery as PR person, the Sea to Sky FreeNet Society as computer tutor and since 2008, the Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association has me work in PR, event photography and office work. Lots of networking to improve communication in Squamish.  I have opposed Squamish Council constantly over more than 3 decades regarding the estuary, tall buildings, retaining a buffer forest along the highway at the Industrial/Business “Park”, etc…  My stand has always been for Jobs in non-polluting industry like the film industry and “saving the scenery” would help that, also putting it in the BC Rail Yard.   The BC Rail Yard was to be a Vocational Training Centre which would have helped with the transition when the economy tanked and so did industry here.  Transportation re:  a commuter bus and full schedules daily for buses and the handi-dart are necessities.   Daycare is needed 24 hours a day and 7 days a week to allow parents to work and enjoy living here.  An Emergency Network is extremely important as Squamish Council insists on building in this flood plain even though killing filling and diking an estuary doesn’t work ANYWHERE!  Then there’s alternate energy sources.  I don’t believe Squamish is short on Wind!!  Besides isn’t that why the power is stored?  Germany will be supplying Europe soon with all the alternative energy sources it is tapping and has stored.  NOW after knowing about the tankers for over 30 years it is all here!  After having alternatives to burning fossil fuels for decades, we are forced to fight Woodfibre LNG.  One spill and our water supply is polluted.  it is more than WLNG It is Global Corporations and it is Christie Clarke and those who vote for jobs at any cost and believe there will be any advantage when slimy things do crawl with legs upon a slimy sea…  water is life, gather at the river, protect the river, give thanks for the river of life

I am Wondering…

Is it true that the majority don’t vote because they like the OFFICIAL COMMUNITY PLAN and Squamish Council?

In elections since the early 80”s

I have opposed the

OCP transportation network through the estuary.

Truck routes are blocked throughout the OCP

except the one to service one business,

the Squamish Terminal.

An estuary is not a parking lot for boats.

I oppose that route for a road and double tracking through the central estuary.

I oppose the Fortis BC Pipeline.

For over 30 years I have opposed OCP amendments

that are constantly being adopted by Squamish Council, amendments that do not favour the estuary or the long-suffering taxpayers.

The taxpayers should at least have:

  • CLEAR VIEWS
  • snow cleared off sidewalks
  • a commuter bus
  • buses and handi darts on a full schedule daily
  • and safe transportation routes

With 3 storey buildings:   Everyone enjoyed the views Without paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for an apartment or a business with a VIEW.

OUR MILLION DOLLAR VIEWS ARE BEING STOLEN.

The OCP now allows for

  • more tall buildings in this flood plain
  • on the waterfront
  • till our population is more than double.
  • NOW We BORROW to Pay for Infrastructure.

The tides are rising in this earthquake zone.

TRAGICALLY

Japans’ 30-foot dike didn’t stop the 30-foot wave.

The preceding earthquake had lowered the ground level a few feet.

Filling and diking are not a solution.

An estuary is a recreational wonderland.

Disney would have locked it off and charged admission!

I Say No to WOODFIBRE LNG,

NO to the FORTIS BC PIPELINE,

NO to TANKERS.

313 voters gave me their trust last election.

When I speak in opposition to Squamish Council

I know 313 voters are with me

and so does Council.

More votes for me would give us a vote

ON Squamish Council

to get an Official Community Plan

that Solves Problems.

Not one that creates them.

Those who vote for me trust me,

Debra McBride,

to represent their vote

ON Squamish Council.

My purpose: To Feed The World
My family farm experience is a source of strength and guidance for me.  The family pulp and paper mill workers provided an early view of industrial destruction of our life giving planet, earth.  As a teenager I enjoyed life in Victoria BC and was mentored by the founders of the health food industry at Viteway Bakery.  My arrival in Squamish in 1977 with 4 dogs 3 cats and a sprouting business was received with interest.  By 1982 I was in the Municipal race for Mayor on the grounds that the estuary plans were destructive. This battle continues today so I am in this election in 2014 to promote Jobs; in non-polluting industry, Transportation; that will be enjoyable, convenient and accessible for workers and visitors, Daycare; to ensure workers and families get the help needed, and a Communication Network; to facilitate Emergency Planning for those in distress.
Our life giving scenery has provided me with work in the film industry.  Recently my interest in the health benefits of teas is now realized as I am an Independent Tea Consultant with Steeped Tea.  I have been most successful creating projects for myself to work on as a volunteer.
Mountain FM benefited from my note taking at D O S Council meetings, the Brackendale Art Gallery found me useful for cooking and cleaning, the Sea to Sky FreeNet Society eventually employed me for computer tutoring and since 2008 the Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association has kept me busy with networking and event photography.  Luckily I was able to attend the Academy of Learning and found I can attain an honours level in all subjects.
I find that people come to Squamish to have fun.  They might need to stay awhile, but have their home bases elsewhere. This allows us to provide temporary accommodation and spare the estuary and ourselves from a population impact for which we are not prepared.
In 30 years the estuary has been able to recover from pollution as many companies left town and left nature to cover and to recover the damaged areas.  We now have the most terrifying, close-up whale watching ever and of course the most delicate balance of life in this our nursery for nature.  Close encounters with wildlife inspire me while I persist in opposing Squamish Council and their plans for expansion which will steal our million dollar views and eliminate the growing businesses which rely on preserving the views, the estuary and our watershed.
To be effective is to have a vote when Squamish Council votes.  I am asking for your vote to elect me, Deb McBride to Squamish Council.  For decades I have witnessed the futility of gathering hundreds of people to oppose Official Community Plan Amendments at Public Hearings. At present I speak at Public Hearings and I represent over 313 voters.  It would be best to have enough voters trust me and elect me to Squamish Council to represent them when the decisions are made.

My dredging opposition and information from John Buchanan

Conclusion :-

After many weeks of talks with both Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans and B.C. Ministry of Environment on the problem, it would seem that revisiting the District of Squamish’s Dredging Protocol would be warranted.

Two items need to be added to this document to ensure the practical implication of this excellent document to ensure the health of people and diverse Ecosystem we have been blessed to have at our doorstep.

Core Sampling :- this is the only sampling technique that works to show the true Mercury hazard and should be adopted as the standard.

Criteria level :- A reasonable Criteria level has to be set.  0.84 is just way to high and provides no safety net at all.

I would ask that all dredging plans be put on hold until this matter is resolved.

John Buchanan

and on…  to Squamish Chief:

2014  Debra McBride for Council

Long-time Squamish volunteer Deb McBride on Thursday (Oct. 14) said she planned to seek a seat on council, saying she’s disappointed with the district’s Official Community Plan. The year-old document shows the future transportation network running through Squamish’s estuary, she said.

This will be McBride’s ninth run for council. McBride has volunteered for the Howe Sound Women’s Centre, the Squamish Estuary Conservation Society, the Sea to Sky Community Services Society and the Squamish Estuary Management Plan Public Involvement Working Group.

In her last campaign, McBride voiced her opposition to development on the waterfront and any buildings downtown taller than three storeys. In her 2008 platform statement, McBride wrote that “council needs to be one of respecting the views of the long suffering, taxpaying Squamish homeowners and opposing the developments that are clear cutting and ruining the Sea to Sky views in Squamish.”

Squamish is in a flood Plain

Squamish Historical Society

INPUT REQUIRED: Flood Management Hazard Plan OPEN HOUSE 5 PM- 8 PM October 23 at the Squamish Adventure Centre

Dear Squamish Historical Society,

The District of Squamish is undertaking a major update of its Flood Hazard Management Plan. The risk of flooding is a fact of life in Squamish given its coastal location and the presence of five mountain rivers. Squamish Historical Society is recognized as an important stakeholder within the Squamish community, and we would like to involve you in the development of this plan.

Managing the risk of flooding to protect life and property is a high priority for the District of Squamish. Twenty-years after its adoption in 1994, the Flood Hazard Management Plan needs to be revisited and updated. The update process will take into account Squamish’s growing population, new flood hazard management approaches, best practices and climate change. Public involvement is an important element in the development of the new Integrated Flood Hazard Management Plan (IFHMP).

You are invited to an Open House from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., October 23 at the Squamish Adventure Centre to learn about Squamish’s coastal flood hazards and provide input on options to manage them.

The intent of the Open House is to provide information on flood risks in Squamish and to gain public feedback on long-term coastal flood protection options. A system of flood protection options for Squamish’s coastal perimeter will be introduced for feedback and discussion.

The development of the IFHMP will be a two year process, which began in the spring of 2014. The October 23rd event at the Adventure Centre is the first of three planned Open Houses. Future Open Houses will take place in the summer of 2015 and the winter of 2015/16.

We value your opinion and expertise. If you have any questions or require further information, please feel free to contact David Roulston, P. Eng., Municipal Engineer, District of Squamish at 604-815-4952 or visit the website at www.squamish.ca, and look for the IFHMP on the Projects & Initiatives tab on the homepage.

We look forward to seeing you at the Open House.

Sincerely,
David Roulston, P.Eng

VOTE TO PROTECT WILD SALMON! SIGN THE PETITION TO MAKE POLITICIANS PROTECT WILD SALMON!

SeaToSkyViews

GMO salmon, European salmon viruses, wild salmon stocks collapsing — what the hell is it going to take for BC’s politicians to realize this must be stopped.

I’m 77, and as someone who has fought companies and governments for decades to protect the environment, I know a chance to save a piece of this planet when I see it, and I see a huge opportunity right now to save BC’s wild salmon.

There is an election happening right now in British Columbia and politicians are finally talking about what they will do now to take on open net salmon farms — but most of their promises fall far short of the real solution: getting the salmon farms out of the Pacific.

Alexandra Morton, a biologist who has been heroically fighting this battle for years, started a petition on Change.org demanding that all party leaders commit to banning open net pens…

Hello,
The fight to save wild salmon from salmon feedlots just went to the next level!

Mercola, the world’s #1 natural health website  just posted our bio-political documentary Salmon Confidential!  Over 10,000 more people have viewed the film in just a few hours for a total of over 90,000 views since it was released a few weeks ago.

I am touring Salmon Confidential through BC, 18 screenings in 20 days you can see the schedule here.   The showings are sparking very animated dialogue afterwards. So many people are fed up and are now taking action, visiting their supermarkets, talking to their BC candidates, signing the boycott and change.org petition.  Finally, people understand they are going to have to step up in large numbers if we are going to protect wild salmon from salmon feedlot disease. Thank you!

Dear Marine Harvest – Don’t

March 5, 2013

Dear Marine Harvest

I have been informed that a large percentage of juvenile Atlantic salmon in your Dalrymple Hatchery, Sayward BC, are infected with the piscine reovirus. I understand that you intend to move these fish into ocean pens in the very near future where the virus will be loosed into the Pacific.

Screen Shot 2013-03-05 at 10.28.45 PM

This Norwegian virus is associated with a disease called Heart and Skeletal Muscle Inflammation known to severely weaken salmon to the point they may be unable to swim up a river. The BC provincial farm salmon vet, Dr. Gary Marty, reported the symptoms of this disease to Mainstream (August 8, 2008 Cohen Commission Exhibit # 1549-018). Heart lesions consistent with this disease were reported in your fish on April 29, 2009 by the same vet:

From Alexandra Morton 03/Aug/2012

Hello

We are testing wild salmon throughout BC right now for the European viruses.  Many First Nations are inviting us to their fishing grounds to sample their fish.  We thank you for your trust and willingness to know the truth about what is going on with the health of your salmon.

This morning the news reports IHN in a salmon farm very close to the Fraser River.  IHN is naturally occurring in BC, but as the Cohen Commission Technical Report #1 states it is one the HIGH RISK viruses to the Fraser sockeye and young sockeye are the most vulnerable.

You can read my letter to DFO’s Director General, Pacific Region, Sue Farlinger asking who specifically in DFO FISH HEALTH is going to be tracking this.  A valid concern is that IHN in salmon farms at the mouth of the Fraser River is a new situation…

Yellow Ribbons for Ole Cherry Tree

I’m comin’ home, I’ve done my time
Now I’ve got to know what is and isn’t mine
If you received my letter telling you I’d soon be free
Then you’ll know just what to do
If you still want me
If you still want me

Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon ’round  ole Cherry Ttree
It’s been three long years
Do ya still want me? (still want me)
If I don’t see a ribbon ’round  ole Cherry Tree
I’ll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don’t see a yellow ribbon ’round  ole Cherry Tree

Bus driver, please look for me
’cause I couldn’t bear to see what I might see
I’m really still in prison
And my love, she holds the key
A simple yellow ribbon’s what I need to set me free
I wrote and told her please

Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon ’round  ole Cherry Ttree
It’s been three long years
Do ya still want me? (still want me)
If I don’t see a ribbon ’round  ole Cherry Tree
I’ll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don’t see a yellow ribbon ’round  ole Cherry Tree

Now the whole damned bus is cheerin’
And I can’t believe I see
A hundred yellow ribbons ’round  ole Cherry Tree

I’m comin’ home, mmm, mmm

MAY 30 2012 BIG NEWS!  from Alexandra MortonHello

Almost unbelievably Minister Don McRae’s Bill 37 has been withdrawn. It remains on the order paper, but will not be revisited in this sitting of the BC Legislature!  The Liberals have cancelled the fall sitting, so it won’t come up for another year. Therefore,  we are free to continue tracking these viruses, figuring out which ones are present and where and what they are doing.  The threat of prison was extremely unpleasant, but we had decided to challenge the act had it passed – a number of lawyers thought it was unconstitutional.

I want to thank all of you who wrote letters, posted comments on the Salmon Are Sacred facebook page, signed the petition (please keep signing). Lana Popham, Michael Sather, and Scott Fraser are fantastic wild…

Hello

In response to the hundreds of you who wrote me about proposed Bill 37 http://www.leg.bc.ca/39th4th/votes/bills-list_hansard.htm that would make disease reporting a punishable offense, I have set up a petition at http://www.change.org/SalmonFlu

By working with change.org we have the opportunity to reach the world.  Because not everyone on earth is as attached to wild salmon as we are, I raised the human health aspect of this that has been dangerously over-looked. So many people, particularly my First Nation family and friends, are asking me about what these viruses are doing to us.  I don’t know, but several nurses and doctors have taken me aside after lectures a to share their concerns that influenza viruses are unpredictable and nasty. So I have simply asked COSTCO and Safeway to label farm salmon with the viruses in them, because the BC Government has chosen to make…

Harper set to pull teeth from Fisheries Act

Please call MP Randy Kamp, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans at his B.C. constituency office (604-466-2761) or his office in Ottawa (613-947-4613) right away. Tell Mr. Kamp that without viable habitat for fish, the health of coastal and ocean ecosystems will suffer, and so will the coastal economies that depend on them. Tell him his government must not proceed with this revision to the Fisheries Act.

Then call your MP whether they are in government or opposition.

The habitat protection provisions of Canada’s Fisheries Act are one of the most important and effective pieces of environmental legislation in this country. “Section 35”, as it’s known, doesn’t just protect fish habitat – it helps protects entire ecosystems. Its loss would be devastating.

Please call before this revision can be included in the Omnibus Budget Bill which will be tabled in the House of Commons on March 29. Once this change to the Act is introduced, Stephen Harper’s government will use their majority to ram it through Parliament.

Without habitat protection in the Fisheries Act there are no barriers to projects and activities that could destroy fish habitats. For example, if this crucial requirement is removed and the Northern Gateway pipeline is approved, Enbridge may be responsible for preventing harm to critical salmon bearing rivers and spawning grounds. If habitat protection is eviscerated from the Act then there could be little opportunity for public input on new salmon farms or on expansions at existing salmon farms.

Please call Mr. Kamp and your MP today. Time is of the essence. We must work together now to avert enormous environmental harm for the future

Best regards,
Mary Lindsay,
Interim Executive Director

SeaToSkyViews

Living Oceans Society is alarmed by the Harper government’s alleged plan to remove habitat protection from the federal Fisheries Act. The changes to the Act will remove the most important protection that we have for the freshwater and marine habitat that Canada’s fish species depend upon.  It also threatens long-established coastal industries such as commercial and sport fisheries, ecotourism, and fish processing plants.

Can you help us stop this gutting of Canada’s environmental protection? Please call MP Randy Kamp, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans at his B.C. constituency office (604-466-2761) or his office in Ottawa (613-947-4613) right away. Tell Mr. Kamp that without viable habitat for fish, the health of coastal and ocean ecosystems will suffer, and so will the coastal economies that depend on them. From Alexandra Morton on SAVING WILD SALMON:

Hello

I received a message from Nova Scotia this morning, where they are desperately fighting off ELEVEN salmon farms.  Please consider signing their petition. They say the voices for wild salmon are vanishing as the fish go. They have spent years trying to bring wild salmon back, are just beginning to succeed and now 11 salmon feedlots are circling them, hungry for their waters. I know what that is like. My little community of Echo Bay fought hard to protect Broughton, but we were way too small, they didn’t even notice us and we lost everything, there are 8 people left.

 http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-open-pen-fish-farming-on-nova-scotias-eastern-shore

I wish I had known what we were in for when salmon farms came banging on our door I would have fought harder, I would never have given them the benefit of our doubts, they looked so reasonable – who knew?  Well we know now.

Also, I have written an open letter to Justice Adair, who presided over the defamation trial Staniford vs Mainstream.  There are things Don Staniford is being accused of that are not true.  I offer her ladyship another view, with pictures, from a person who was there – me.

http://alexandramorton.typepad.com/alexandra_morton/2012/02/dear-justice-adair.html

On Friday, Justice Adair refused to rule on Mainstream’s draconian proposal to immediately stop Staniford from speaking about fish farms. The terms of the request are so vague as to be nearly impossible to comply with and I believe would affect any who quoted anything related to Staniford. She will make a ruling on this at any moment.  As well, she could rule on the case at anytime – Did Don Staniford defame Mainstream, even though he never mentioned their name in the offending cigarette packs he used to draw parallels between the way Big Tobacco and Big Salmon manage public opinion?  We heard testimony on scientific papers reporting cancer-causing contaminants in farm salmon, then heard about salmon farming advertisements that targeted pregnant women to eat more farm salmon, as well as, an ad used on British Columbians reporting farm salmon are “natural, nutritious and free of contaminants.”  Shame.

Most concerning to me was Mainstream’s effort to make Staniford a liar for saying that thousands of us gathered in Victoria to tell government to get salmon farms out of the ocean, get away from our fish in the GET OUT Migration. I think it is dangerous when lawyers attempt to undo history, say people were not there. I have posted a slideshow on the link above in defense of all 5,000-7,000 of us who were there. This number came from the security guards at the Parliament Buildings in Victoria.  It would appear our message was not received.

Vote Deb McBride 4 Skyviews on the SLRD Board and Squamish Council

Hi Everyone, I’m Deb McBride

HometownVictoriaBC

Thank you for your interest in the Election

I‘ve educated myself to be in this election

to enable a change of plan

to a plan for survival.

That’s my part.

Your part’s to Vote.

My Logo’s 4 skyviews

4skyviews on WordPress.com

4 skyviews represents a plan

where we see in all directions.

With 4 sky views

our light and our views

are not blocked,

by blocks of tall buildings.

Squamish started in a self-sustaining way, with

double lots, gardens, fruit trees and light from 4 sky views.

To compliment this garden lifestyle, the OCP needs to protect groves of precious trees and estuary.

A garden community needs a New Plan for Survival.

Protecting the entire estuary ensures

a stable self-sustaining economy.

The world watches as we control

the resources for planetary survival.

Our Squamish must be cleansed and restored; as was the BritanniaBeacharea, thanks to the Fraser Basin Council.  Residents there, after renting for decades with the promise of land titles, finally got them in the 21st century.

I support SLRD residents in finding solutions to situations and realize that you feel ignored in your requests for even the simplest solutions like blocking the road at Starvation Lake Trail so as to keep the partiers out and reduce the fire hazard they cause.

I lived inParadiseValleyin 1977/78, also inBritanniaBeachin 2001/2 and nearDaisyLakein 1975-77.  I also worked in the area on accounts and marketing for a construction company 1975-1985.  In 1978-79 I had my own business growing and marketing sprouts from Whistler toNorth Vancouver.

I have been presenting alternatives to clear cutting and building high density housing for decades.

The recent attempt to combine the District of Squamish and other municipalities in to an SLRD Official Community Plan is interesting to me because the SLRD has limited development of the waterfront community near Watts Point which will preserve the forest there and limit the development to the original proposed size.  Squamish needs to learn from this example as Squamish has waterfront estuary zoned for development even though the estuary has its’ own value.

I am in both elections so as to protect wildlife habitat from sea to glacier.

Being on the Cheakamus River Restoration Stakeholder Team has taught me a lot about the problems for residents with BC Hydro and the unexpected releases fromDaisyLakeDam.  I am amazed that after the release ofDaisyLakeDamin 1980-81 which totally flooded Squamish downtown, BC Hydro is still not regulating the even release of dam water.

Of interest is that BC Hydro is contracting out for work on fish habitat restoration projects and putting out of work their own fish habitat restoration experts.

Eco-tourism depends on the health of our watershed.  Tourists in Squamish see light, scenery, 4 sky views.  We can enhance this experience and employ local people of all skill levels including grads of our universities BY:

  • Re-establishing the Environmental Co-ordinator and projects that research and restore the estuary and watershed
  • Enhancing Recreation Areas
  • Accommodating Retirees
  • Producing food in greenhouses and in the estuary
  • Ensuring the Film Industry of the scenery it needs, long term.

To maintain services and gain on the debt we need to stop borrowing and to start Zero Budgeting.  Then we can:

  • Improve transit and Regain the commuter bus to keep people working
  • Make the Budgets First Priority the Full funding of grants in aid, from last years requests, to help people survive
  • Provide a bus ride and the Rec Centre Auditorium for Food Bank Recipients
  • Provide the campground at the Rec Centre for those who live outdoors
  • Add more campgrounds to help visitors stay longer
  • Survive with solar and safe alternative Energy sources

The OCP must be a plan for survival.  With a self-sustaining population, a protected estuary and watershed our survival is possible.
