Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council (SSISC)

I’m writing to let you know of a brand new not-for-profit group that has formed to help control the spread of invasive plants and animals in the Sea to Sky corridor.  Called the Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council (SSISC), the group will work in cooperation and coordination with other regional invasive committees in a province wide effort to minimize the negative impacts caused by the introduction, establishment, and spread of invasive species.
Second only to habitat loss, invasive species have been identified as the most significant threat to biodiversity.  Invasive plants can also alter water flow and lead to erosion and/or less available water; create and increase the fire hazard; contain substances that are toxic to people and animals; and reduce crop yield.
The group includes local organizations, concerned residents, local governments and Provincial agencies, and is linked into similar councils across BC. Our first goals are to gather information on the occurrence of invasive species in the Sea to Sky corridor,  identify priority species and organize control work on those species.
Beyond making you aware of our group, this is also an invite for you volunteer to be part of our group as either a Director, an Advisor or someone who can help document the location of invasive species on the ground.   Since we are so new we do not yet have a web site, but here are some useful links that identify some key invasive species.  By the end of the summer we hope to have a list that is specific to the Sea to Sky Corridor.
